Why not convert in the browser?

Browsers can decode MP3 and WAV reliably but cannot encode FLAC, Opus, or M4A without a large Wasm bundle. Server-side ffmpeg is faster and smaller.

What is the best lossless format?

FLAC for archival — half the size of WAV with identical audio. ALAC (M4A) for Apple ecosystems.

Does Opus sound better than MP3?

Generally yes, especially below 96 kbps. Support is excellent on web and modern devices.
